Kit cars are okay...to a point...
As genuine Cobras demand stratospheric prices these days, there are at least a couple of Cobra kit manufacturers that offer some really nice clones for a fraction of the cost of the real thing. I helped a friend put his Cobra kit together, and despite the incorrect '86 donor 5.0L Ford drivetrain, it sounded and looked like the real thing!
As long as you didn't open the hood, you had a really cool looking beast to cruise in the weekends, without fear of incident (like some soccer mom t-boning your genuine '63 Shelby-autographed prize).
I like the Manx dune buggy kits...thought about doing mine (except my Super Beetle front end would have to be tossed). Dune buggies are cool, and a lot spiffier when the VW motor doesn't have to lug 1500 lbs of steel pan and body!
But doing a replica kit of a rare specimen is just downright stupid! Doing it right would be cost prohibitive to say the least, and even so, who's going to believe that "Joe Schmo" is tooling down the road with one of five left in the world!???
