It'd probably be much much cheaper and the car's value would be higher to just replace the gasser engine on that car. 300 engines are very easy to find, its one of the most sold models in MB's usa history.
As a diesel that car would have had a 603 diesel, quite hard to find and quite expensive.....it'd not be a small undertaking. And if the car has 4matic, I'd fix it!
