To remove the pads it helps to use a C-clamp to compress the pads against the caliper pistons. This will force brake fluid back up into the resevoir. To avoid overflow, I suggest getting a small fluid pump and removing half of the brake fluid in the resevoir. Then top it up with fresh fluid if needed when you have the new pads in.

Also, wear mechanics gloves and be sure to wear at least a painters' mask when removing the old pads to avoid breathing any asbestos dust.
